Senior Move Manager vs. Realtor: Which Do You Actually Need?
By Lori Gladstone, SRES® · 7 min read
If you're helping a parent move, you've probably hit this fork already. One friend says "hire a senior move manager." Another says "you just need a good Realtor." Both are right — and both are only half the picture. Here's the plain-English difference, so you can stop guessing and start with the right kind of help.
What a senior move manager does
A senior move manager handles the move itself — the human, hands-on part. That means sorting a lifetime of belongings, deciding what stays and what goes, arranging donations and estate sales, hiring and directing the movers, planning the new floor layout, and unpacking so the first night in the new place feels like home. It is part logistics, part patience, part grief counselor. What it is not is a real estate license.
What a Realtor (especially an SRES®) does
A Realtor is licensed to handle the home as an asset — pricing it correctly, preparing and marketing it, negotiating the offers, and carrying the sale to closing. A Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES®) adds specific training for the financial and emotional realities of a later-life sale: exemptions, timing around care, and the fact that this house is not a "listing" — it's where a family grew up.
One handles the boxes. The other handles the deed. A move usually needs both.
The part nobody warns you about
Here's the catch families discover the hard way: if you hire them separately, you become the project manager. You're the one relaying the move-out date to the mover, the staging plan to the agent, the closing date to the estate-sale company — while also being the daughter, the son, the one holding your parent's hand. Coordinating two separate professionals during an already-tender season is a second job you didn't sign up for.
The calmer answer: one guide who does both
This is exactly why Blessed Moves exists. Lori Gladstone is both a licensed SRES® Realtor and a transition guide — so the move and the sale are held by one trusted person, on one timeline, with one point of contact for the whole family. And the line between the two stays clear and honest:
- Blessed Moves Transitions — the downsizing, the family conversation, the move coordination. Independent support that does not require a real estate license, available whether or not you ever sell.
- Blessed Moves Real Estate — the licensed sale, through eXp Realty, LLC, only if and when a home is part of the plan. Never a condition of the transition help.
You always know which kind of help you're receiving, and what it costs.
So what does it cost?
Move-management and downsizing help is usually billed by the hour or by project — separate from any real estate commission on a sale. Two things to hold onto: at Blessed Moves, transition guidance is never a condition of listing the home, and no fee is accepted from the vendors recommended (movers, organizers, estate-sale pros). The advice you get is the advice that's right for your family — not the referral that pays the most.
How to choose, in one line
If you're only simplifying and staying put, you need transition help. If you're only selling and everything's already handled, you need a Realtor. If it's a real move — a home to sell and a life to pack — you'll save yourself weeks by finding one guide who does both.
